We've heard countless stories with the same plot.
An unsuspecting patient calls upon a specialized doctor for help with POP or SUI, most often a urogynecologist or a gynecologist.
The patient shares complaints of stress urinary incontinence (UI) or pelvic organ prolapse (POP), and sometimes also hernia.
The doctor immediately begins to discuss the newest "Gold Standard" in treatment for SUI, POP or hernia: Transvaginal Mesh Repair Tape/Kits and/or Hernia Plugs.
The doctor describes the procedure as "minimally-invasive" and an outpatient or day surgery with optimal results and minimal recovery time in a hospital or an outpatient surgical unit.
In fact, most patients were told they would leave the hospital the same day, all fixed up, and that complications were rare for this "tried-and-true" method. Many patients were not informed that complications could be PERMANENT and that the devices themselves are PERMANENT.
The patient was given a glossy brochure, produced by one of the mesh manufacturers themselves - geared to sell to its mesh products - through trusting doctor-to-patient relationships. Sometimes patients were sent home with an instructional DVD, pointing out how easy and painless the procedure is.
MANY PATIENTS DESCRIBE THE ABOVE STORY A DIFFERENT WAY:
AS A DAILY HORROR, LIKE LIVING WITH BARBED WIRE INSIDE THEIR BODIES.

AS IT TURNS OUT,
THIS "GOLD STANDARD" PROCEDURE IS NO SUCH THING!
Patients, often immediately, begin to report significant problems including severe pain that goes on well past the point of post-operative healing, an inability to urinate or void, the loss of the use of limbs and/or muscles, or a burning sensation at the site of implant and severe pain with intimacy. While many patients were informed about the possible complications, patients were not informed that the complications could be permanent.
- Many patients were not presented with alternative treatments to surgery, and patients were not told there are organic procedures that do not use polypropylene.
- Many patients were not told that Polypropylene Plastic would be used in the procedure at all.
- Many patients weren't told that the polypropylene mesh implant is a PERMANENT IMPLANT.
- Many patients were not told that these mesh products and procedures for SUI and POP were not tested on humans.
- Many patients were not told that, in the case of unforeseen problems or adverse events, the manufacturers didn't train surgeons to remove the device. Patients were not informed: There is no "exit strategy" available to doctor or patient.
IT'S NO WONDER THEN, THAT MILLIONS ARE LIVING IN A HORRIFIC AMOUNT OF CHRONIC PAIN WITH NO WAY OUT, NO SOLUTION TO ALLEVIATE PERMANENT, PROFOUND, LIFE-ALTERING SYMPTOMS.
Before coming to market, the mesh products were not adequately tested. Product for repair of SUI and POP were never tested on live humans - only cadavers and dogs! As a result, most doctors, surgeons and even researchers don't know what to expect.
Injuries from failed medical polypropylene mesh implants range from minor, but persistent, irritants to profound, life-altering and PERMANENT, IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE which leaves the victim without any sort of quality of life.
COMMON INJURIES FROM FAILED MEDICAL MESH IMPLANT:
•Dyspareunia (Painful Intercourse)
•Erosion of mesh through the vaginal wall or other tissues (causes a slow, worsening chronic pain as mesh works its way to the skin's surface)
•“Hispareunia” - injury to spouse/partner, pain & infection
•Adhesion to surrounding organs including the bladder, bowel, urethra, vagina, intestines, arteries = PAIN
•Degradation of the mesh, releasing particulate matter = RELEASE OF FREE RADICALS, KNOW CARCINOGENS
•Fraying, roping & migration of the mesh = PAIN
•Hardening of the mesh = SCAR TISSUE, ENCAPSULATION OF SEVERE CHRONIC BACTERIAL INFECTION, PAIN
•Development of painful scar tissue = HARDENING OF ONCE-PLIABLE SKIN
•Voiding dysfunction of the bowel and bladder - PAINFUL CONSTIPATION, PAIN WITH OVERLY FULL BLADDER
•Bleeding - from vaginal canal or internally because of erosion/adhesion of mesh to organs = INTENSE PAIN
•Permanent nerve damage, causing permanent motor or sensory dysfunction = INTENSE, CHRONIC PAIN
